New Polling Places

The Ulster County Board of Elections has been consolidating polling places and locating more suitable places to vote, especially for folks with accessibility challenges.  Check out this website to confirm where you’re going to be voting this fall either in the September primary elections or the November general elections:  http://ntsdata.dnsalias.com/ulsterboe/pollingplacelookup.aspx.

This does NOT apply to school district voting or today’s Kingston library vote.  All Kingston Area Library voting takes place at the library itself from 10am to 8pm.

The Library Vote

Don’t forget to vote in the Kingston Area Library elections today.  The elections are held in the library from 10am to 8pm, and you’ll be voting on the budget and members of the board of trustees.

This note from library director Margie Menard provides some useful information.  This is something that I cut and pasted from my inbox:

Here are some of the details of our upcoming election: We have three trustee seats open each for a three year term. The three city residents standing for election are Jane Eisenberg, Heather Ohlson and David Rolfe.

The proposed tax levy for 2011 is $691,868 for an increase of just over $33,000 over 2010. That means that homeowners will be providing 30 cents per $1,000 of assessed value and businesses will be providing 60 cents per $1,000 of assessed value. For a homeowner with a home valued at $170,000, the average value of a home in Kingston, that means they would be providing $51.00 annually for library services. According to city of Kingston Comptroller John Tuey, library taxes make up just under 3% of homeowner’s combined city and county tax share (not including school taxes) .

With our proposed increase, we will be able to address some further areas of need that were identified through surveys and focus groups in the fall of 2008 during the course of developing a long range plan for the library. These include providing more adult and young adult educational and cultural programming, increasing our audio-visual collection for all ages, maintenance of the library’s beautiful gardens and property, and increasing the library’s bandwidth to support the rising demands on our public computers.

Please contact me or any current board members with any questions and come out to vote on Tuesday  June 1st. Kingston Library is your library.
